What is a local and wide area network?

A local area network supplies networking capability to a group of computers in close proximity to each other such as in an office building, a school, or a home.

A wide area network is a mean of interconnecting two or more local area networks which are situated in different geographical locations. There are many ways of interconnecting these sites but the most cost effective way is by establishing VPN a tunnel at each end point.
